Australian summers are tough on cars. Direct sun through the windscreen heats up the dash, steering wheel and seats, and over time UV exposure can fade and crack interior surfaces. A few simple habits go a long way.
1. Park in the shade (or face away from the sun)
It sounds obvious, but parking under cover or with the windscreen facing away from the afternoon sun reduces direct exposure.
2. Use a windscreen sunshade every time
A sunshade blocks direct sunlight through the largest window in your car. Umbrella-style shades like ShadeFlip open in seconds and fold into the door pocket, so you'll actually use one every day instead of leaving it in the boot.
3. Cover the steering wheel and seatbelt buckles
Metal buckles and dark steering wheels get hot to the touch. Tuck buckles away from direct sun and throw a small towel over the wheel.
4. Crack the windows slightly (where safe)
A small gap lets hot air escape. Only do this where it's safe and secure, and never leave children or pets in a parked car, even for a few minutes.
5. Protect your dash
A UV-protectant dash treatment helps reduce fading and cracking over time.
